A messy but yummy recipe – Bolognese Pasta Rotola

Our Munchkin loves Roasted Vegetable Rotola and has reached the age where I wanted her to start eating meat. I decided as she loved this meal so much I would adapt it and try to add some meat for her to try.

DSC_0024 Bolognese Pasta Rotola Ingredients:

  • 500g of mince beef
  • 1 onion, diced.
  • 250g of fresh baby spinach
  • 500ml of passata
  • 6 fresh pasta sheets
  • olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of dried oregano
  • 2 tablespoons of Worchestershire Sauce
  • 2 clove garlic
  • 100g grated cheddar cheese
  • 50g Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 250ml of milk
  • 3 tablespoons of plain flour

Method:

Preheat oven to 350ºF/180 C/ gas 4 To make the cheese sauce: Melt the butter in a small pan. Take off the heat and add the flour gradually stirring until you have a thick paste. Add the milk and stir so that the paste dissolves into the mixture. It will thicken. Now add the grated cheese and allow to melt. Allow to cool before using in the rotola. To make the Bolognese sauce: Saute the beef using a little olive oil in a medium pan. Add the oregano and Worchestershire sauce. Once stirred, add the spinach and allow to wilt. Simmer for 5 minutes. To make the passata sauce: Place a large casserole dish over a medium heat on the hob. Add the olive oil and sauté the onion until softened and starting to brown, this takes about 2 minutes. Crush the garlic onto the onions, stir and simmer for another minute. Finally add the passata and simmer for 10 minutes. While the sauce is simmering begin to make your pasta rotolas. Boil the kettle. Pour boiling water into a dish that you can lay the lasagne sheets down flat in. Put each sheet in the water for a minute to soften. Soften one at a time, fill, roll, chop and repeat. image To assemble the rotola, place one (soaked) lasagne sheet on a work surface. Spread a couple of tablespoons of the cheese sauce onto one soaked pasta sheet. Next spoon over a couple of tablespoons of the bolognese sauce. Roll up the lasagne sheet long ways. Cut the sheet into 4 equal chunks and place these into the tomato sauce (casserole dish). Repeat for each lasagne sheet. image Sprinkle with the Parmesan. Place in the oven and bake about 30 minutes.
